Aldous Huxley s Brave New World - 875 Words

From the beginning of time, humans have strived to be happy. During this time, thousands of different people have given their interpretation of happiness. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, the simplified definition of happiness is feeling pleasure or joy because of a certain situation. In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Controller, Mustapha Mond, conceals the truth in order to keep everyone happy. He gives his people drugs and brainwashes them into believing that their life is good. Satisfying. When John the Savage enters the novel, he questions all things concerning â€Å"civilization.† The civilized people are willing to do everything in their power to hide from the truth. These people were conditioned to stay away from the truth†¦show more content†¦In the World State, people are conditioned from the day they are decanted with chemicals, hypnopaedia, and Neo Pavlova. Humans today have always been told â€Å"money is power† and â€Å"go to college, get a good job, then you will be happy.† Even though we feel emotions, people will do anything in order to feel the sensation of being happy just like the World State. Brave New World is our world with a surplus of drugs, sex, and people conditioned to think that they are happy and fair. People in our society look for their â€Å"soma† to become instantly happy; however, they what they don’t look for is the long term. Soma is a drug that keeps people happy. Everyone has some version of soma that will keep them happy for a brief amount of time. But why do people focus on being happy for a short time rather than forever? The answer is simple. The happiest man on earth thinks, â€Å"Short term happiness usually results in a short burst of dopamine being released in our brains. However, that dopamine doesn’t last. But we remember it. And we want it again. So, what do we do? We repeat the behavior that made us feel that way the first time around.â₠¬  Mustapha Mond has his people taking soma and being conditioned to be happy long term, even if it’s not real. They will never question authorities, but are still 100% satisfied with their lives. Living a happy life means
